The Healthy Lawn Program Annual Maintenance Calendar

And What You Should Be Doing Right Now (Wellington Edition)

If you want a lush, green, healthy lawn year-round, timing is everything. Many Wellington homeowners water when it’s dry, spray weeds when they see them, or throw down fertiliser whenever it’s on sale. But the best lawn results come from working with the seasons, not against them.

That’s why we created this localised lawn care calendar—a month-by-month guide tailored specifically to Wellington’s weather, soil types, and grass varieties (like Tall Fescue and Play Lawn). We’ll cover fertilising, weed control, pest treatments, moss management, and when to seed or renovate.

🌱 JANUARY – Summer Boost

  • Apply: Instant fertiliser + weed spray

  • Why: Nutrients are needed to maintain colour through summer. Weeds thrive in dry soil—get them early.

  • Water: Deep watering once or twice a week if there’s no rain.

  • Mow: Slightly higher to reduce stress and protect roots.

🌱 FEBRUARY – Feeding + Weed Management

  • Apply: Repeat fertiliser + weed spray

  • Why: Lawns are still active but stressed from heat. Weed control now stops autumn spread.

  • Tip: Avoid watering in the evening—damp overnight conditions encourage disease.

🍂 MARCH – Grass Grub Prevention

  • Apply: Grass grub treatment + slow-release fertiliser + weed spray

  • Why: Early autumn is prime time for insect damage. Get ahead of the grub lifecycle.

  • Check: For chewed roots or brown patches lifting easily.

🍂 APRIL – Autumn Repair

  • Apply: Instant fertiliser + weed spray

  • Why: Cool nights and moist soil make this the best time for lawn recovery and overseeding.

  • Seed: Overseed patchy areas with Tall Fescue.

  • Mow: Lower slightly to prep for winter growth slowdown.

🍁 MAY – Strengthen for Winter

  • Apply: Fertiliser + weed spray

  • Why: Build strong root systems before cold weather. Weeds still germinate this late in the season.

  • Watch For: Moss starting in shaded or poorly draining areas.

❄️ JUNE – Winter Watch

  • Apply: Fertiliser + weed spray

  • Why: Your lawn still needs nutrients in winter, especially in frost-prone areas.

  • Avoid: Walking on frozen or saturated turf—it compacts the soil and damages roots.

❄️ JULY – Quiet but Important

  • Apply: Fertiliser + weed spray

  • Why: Mid-winter still requires low-level feeding. Preventing broadleaf weeds from taking hold now pays off in spring.

  • Tip: Keep lawn edges tidy to improve appearance while growth is slow.

❄️ AUGUST – Moss & Moisture Management

  • Apply: Fertiliser + weed spray + moss spray (if needed)

  • Why: Shady, damp areas may show moss. Treat early before it spreads.

  • Prep: Inspect drainage and clear gutters to reduce pooling.

🌱 SEPTEMBER – Spring Kick-Off

  • Apply: Grass grub treatment + slow-release fertiliser + weed spray

  • Why: Everything wakes up! Grubs return, so preventative treatment is key.

  • Aerate: Use a garden fork or aerator to relieve compaction.

  • Overseed: This is prime time for lawn renovation.

🌼 OCTOBER – Growth Surge

  • Apply: Fertiliser + weed spray

  • Why: Rapid growth means more demand for nutrients. Target weeds while they’re still small.

  • Mow: Increase frequency but never remove more than ⅓ of the blade height.

🌼 NOVEMBER – Prep for Summer

  • Apply: Fertiliser + weed spray

  • Why: Build up health before summer stress. A strong lawn = fewer weeds.

  • Water: Early mornings are best. Avoid short daily sprinkles—go deep.

🎄 DECEMBER – Lawn for the Holidays

  • Apply: Fertiliser + weed spray

  • Why: Give your lawn a lush look for summer gatherings. Stay on top of colour and density.

  • Tip: Now’s a great time to re-edge garden borders and add mulch.
