Seeding

Grow a Healthier, Greener Lawn—From the Ground Up

Starting from bare soil? Want to bring a tired lawn back to life? At Just Grass NZ, we offer professional seeding and overseeding services that help you grow a thick, healthy lawn—naturally. Whether you're establishing a brand-new lawn or thickening up patchy areas, we’ve got the expertise and products to get results.

  • We help homeowners:

    • Establish new lawns after construction or landscaping

    • Fill in thinning or worn-out patches

    • Improve overall colour, softness and density

    • Prepare lawns for seasonal transitions

Seeding is a smart, cost-effective way to create or restore a lawn with a natural look and feel.

  • Our seeding process includes the addition of 30–60mm of our specially blended organic lawn mix. This premium topsoil is:

    • Free-draining to prevent waterlogging

    • Nutrient-rich to promote healthy root development

    • Light and friable to support easy germination and blade emergence

It’s the perfect base for strong, resilient lawn growth—especially in Wellington’s varied conditions.

  • To germinate successfully, grass seed needs:

    • Sunlight – Full sun or light shade is best

    • Water – Consistent moisture is crucial for 2–3 weeks post-application

    • Warm soil – Germination works best in mild, settled weather

That’s why we recommend seeding in:

    • Early Autumn (March–May) – Warm soil and natural rainfall

    • Early Spring (September–November) – Increasing sun and ideal temps

  • Seeding is natural, but not always simple—especially in the Wellington region. Here are some of the most common hurdles:

    • Wellington Winds – Wind can blow seed off shallow surfaces before it roots

    • Birds – Birds often feed on exposed seed (we use mulches or light soil coverings to deter this)

    • Patchy Germination – Shade, slopes, and moisture issues can affect growth rates

    • Dry-Out Risk – Seed must stay moist until fully sprouted, which means proper watering is critical

    • Follow-Up Applications – Some lawns may need a second sow to fill in gaps

We set realistic expectations and are happy to return for extra passes if needed.

  • We always try to match your existing lawn variety where possible, particularly when overseeding. But some variation may occur due to availability or climate factors. Our goal is always to choose a compatible, resilient seed blend that will blend in and thrive in your yard long-term.

  • Every seeding or overseeding job includes:

    • Site preparation (light cultivation, dethatching, or levelling)

    • Organic lawn mix topsoil (30–60mm layer)

    • Grass seed application

    • Rolling or light mulch/top-dress to protect seed

    • Optional starter fertilizer

    • Watering schedule and care tips

    • New Lawn Seeding: 1–2 days for most residential sites

    • Overseeding: Completed in 1 visit

    • Growth Time: Visible sprouts in 7–14 days with good care
