Artificial Turf Maintenance Tips

How to Keep Your Lawn Looking Fresh Year-Round in Wellington

Artificial turf might be low maintenance—but it’s not no maintenance. To keep your lawn looking lush, clean, and long-lasting, it’s important to give it the right care at the right time.

At Just Grass NZ, we install premium artificial turf across Wellington, Kapiti, Hutt Valley, and Wairarapa—and we always educate our customers on simple, seasonal upkeep. Whether you’ve just had a new lawn installed or you’re years into enjoying it, this guide will help you keep it performing like new.

🗓️ Weekly to Fortnightly: Quick Debris Removal

Leaves, twigs, feathers, or even rubbish can build up on your turf. Over time, this organic matter begins to decompose, which can lead to weed growth, moss development, or even discolouration.

  • Use a leaf blower, stiff-bristled broom, or plastic rake

  • Always brush with the turf grain (not against it) to avoid damage

  • Focus on corners, under trees, and fence lines where debris tends to collect

💡 Tip: Stay on top of autumn leaf fall—it decomposes fast and can trigger unwanted growth.

💧 Monthly: Light Rinse to Keep It Fresh

Even in Wellington’s cooler climate, pollen, dust, and pet odours can build up over time. A monthly rinse helps:

  • Remove fine dust and pollen

  • Freshen the surface

  • Prevent static buildup

  • Reduce lingering pet odours

Use a garden hose on light pressure to wash down the area—early morning or late afternoon is ideal.

🐾 Pet Zones: Hygiene Matters

Artificial turf is great for pets—but it needs simple care to stay fresh:

  • Scoop solids daily, just like you would on real lawn

  • Rinse urine areas regularly (especially in summer)

  • Use an enzyme-based deodoriser for lingering smells—just make sure it’s turf safe

  • Never use bleach or acidic cleaners—they can damage the turf fibres or backing

🐶 Good airflow and sun help naturally deodorise your turf—but a rinse goes a long way in high-use areas.

🌿 Weeds: Early Intervention is Key

Weeds don’t grow through artificial turf—but seeds can settle on top of the surface, especially at the edges or joins. The most common cause? Wind, birds, or decomposing leaf litter.

We advise:

  • Plucking weeds out by hand the moment you see them (before they take root)

  • Removing organic debris early, before it decomposes and creates a soil-like layer

  • Avoiding harsh weed sprays—use turf-safe herbicides only if absolutely necessary

🌱 Weeds can root into decomposing material and work their way through turf seams—so clean, not spray, is your first line of defence.

🧹 Every 4–6 Weeks: Groom and Brush

Turf blades naturally start to flatten over time—especially in high-traffic areas like:

  • Play zones

  • Entryways

  • Pet paths

  • Entertaining areas

Brushing the turf:

  • Lifts the blades back up for a fuller look

  • Dislodges dust or crumbs

  • Keeps infill distributed evenly

Use a stiff broom, turf rake, or ask us about power brooming services for larger lawns.

🌧️ Seasonal Advice for Wellington Lawns

☀️ Summer

  • Hose turf before pet or barefoot use on very hot days

  • Watch for shade-moss or compacted areas under furniture

❄️ Winter

  • Turf drains well—no need to worry about flooding

  • Keep the surface clear of wet leaves to prevent moss buildup

⚠️ What to Avoid

  • Don’t use bleach, ammonia, or acidic cleaners

  • Avoid placing BBQs, fire pits, or hot objects directly on turf

  • Don’t drag furniture across the surface—lift it instead

  • No pressure washers or vacuums—they can damage seams and backing

🚫 Artificial turf is durable—but not invincible. A little care goes a long way.

🧪 Optional Maintenance: Moss & Algae Control

In shaded or damp zones, you may notice moss or algae starting to form. It’s manageable with regular attention:

  • Brush the area first with a stiff broom

  • Apply a turf-safe moss killer if needed (we can supply or recommend one)

  • Rinse and let dry in sunlight

Need help? Our monthly Healthy Lawn Program offers treatments for both artificial and real turf.

🧰 Annual Check-up

Once a year, take a few minutes to:

  • Check edges and seams for any lifting or movement

  • Ensure sand infill is evenly distributed (we can top-up if needed)

  • Review traffic areas for brushing or minor repairs

✅ In Summary

Artificial turf is designed to save you hours of lawn care—but a small amount of attention helps it last longer and look its best.

Just Grass NZ Tip:
Brush it. Rinse it. Keep it clean. That’s the secret to turf that stays lush, fresh, and pet-friendly for years to come.
